Police Jury Announces New Litter Initiative, ‘Pick It Up Calcasieu’

Post Date:09/19/2019

The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury announced the details of the new parishwide litter initiative, “Pick It Up Calcasieu,” at a news conference on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Prien Lake Park.

“Pick It Up Calcasieu” features opportunities for public participation, online and social media, marketing, law enforcement and education.

In 2018, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury asked residents to take part in a citizen survey as part of the Police Jury’s Strategic Planning Initiative. Survey results identified litter as the second most important concern to residents, behind drainage. The Strategic Plan, which outlines parish priorities through 2022, was approved by the Police Jury on Jan. 17, 2019.

Pick it up Calcasieu consists of three components:

  • Pick it up/Clean it up – Continued use of litter abatement crews, encouraging use of solid waste convenience centers in Lake Charles and Sulphur and a revamped Adopt-a- Spot Program
  • Education/Public Awareness – Continued use of media campaigns and increased educational programs in parish schools
  • Enforcement – increased enforcement from all law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Wyvette Pryor-Cousin, Calcasieu Parish Litter Manager, said the “Pick It Up Calcasieu” initiative needs everyone to become involved to make it a success.

‘“Pick It Up’ is about action, not just words. We know that litter trashes our roads and open spaces, but we know we can reduce it - and even stop it - when we all ‘Pick It Up,’” she said. “Join the movement and help us to Pick It Up!”

“We encourage residents to Adopt-a-Spot, no matter where you live, by calling 493-LITR. We provide all the materials needed and are excited for citizens to become involved,” said Tom Hoefer, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury’s Director of Communications.
