Bridges are important elements in the roadway transportation system because they constitute a major investment and serve as vital links in the transportation system. A bridge with load or width restrictions disrupts the ability to deliver goods and services, particularly emergency services; and increase user costs.
For these reasons, a major parish responsibility is the planning and operation of a bridge maintenance and replacement program, with the objective of preserving the investment in the parish’s bridges and maintaining the desired level of service. The bridge maintenance program involves conducting detailed inspections, selecting proper maintenance activities, and timely replacement.
