Spray Operation Quick Facts
  1. There are over 90 designated truck spray zones in the parish, each taking between 2.5-4 hours for treatment. Aerial application zones are custom drawn and not preset.
  2. Spray schedules are not set on a regular or rotating schedule, but established based on daily inspection data.
  3. Spray assignments are normally set by 2:30pm each day.
  4. Normal spray operations begin shortly before dark and proceeds into the evening hours, often times not ending until well after midnight. There may be times when some spray assignments will be performed in the early morning hours, right before dawn.
  5. Weather conditions that can shut-down spray operations include: rain, dense fog, high winds or cool temperatures.
  6. There are 14 trucks and 2 airplanes permanently rigged for mosquito spraying.
  7. All insecticides utilized are EPA approved for use in this manner. Information on these insecticides can be found at the EPA website..
  8. Each spray unit is equipped with GPS tracking and flow control monitoring to assist in the safe and efficient application of materials.Mosquito Seal
  9. The spray trucks are equipped with GPS tracking monitors to record all activity of the nights work including path of vehicle, speed at any given time, stops and spray on/off.
  10. Insecticide flow control sensors allow for spray applications to be successful with truck speeds ranging between 7mph to 18mph. Roads with speed limits below the minimum range cannot be sprayed.
  11. All application equipment is regularly calibrated to assure the proper flow rate and droplet size at the time of application.
  12. Operators are given designated spray assignments for the evening and must not deviate from these areas unless directed to do so by their supervisor.
  13. Because roads divide spray zones, residents may see a spray truck working a block or two from their residence yet not spray their road.
  14. The spray engines on the trucks remain running the entire time a spray zone is being traveled. However, only when the top lights are blinking is the spray switch activated.

Policy for Private Roads / Drives

  1. The residential dwelling must be 300 feet off the road. This corresponds to the effective drift listed for ground application on the insecticides labels.
  2. The road/drive must have a hard surface and be in very good condition. Gravel, shell, asphalt or paved meet this criteria. Dirt or grass surfaces are not acceptable.
  3. The end of the road/drive must have enough room for the drivers to safely turn around without going off the hard surface.
  4. Roads/drives with speed bumps create a problem for drivers to maintain a constant speed. If the speed bumps are too close together, traveling the necessary speed is impossible.
  5. Posted speed limits must be 7mph or greater.
  6. Drivers will not open or unlock gates. Therefore roads with closed gates will not be considered.
  7. For the driver’s safety, they have been instructed not to stop when being flagged down. If a citizen has a question about the operation or particular request, please call the office between 6:30am and 3:00pm Monday-Friday (721-3780).

Some Additional Facts Concerning This Policy

  • Before a driveway is considered for placement on the spray map, it is inspected to assure it is in compliance with the policy.
  • If at any time during the year the driveway conditions change, the road/drive is removed from the spray map.
  • Drivers are given the discretion to make decisions on the drivability of any road/drive on any given night.
  • In the case of prolonged or excessive rain, traveling private roads/drives may be suspended for a given period of time.
